Ali had tried, and failed, not to check her phone constantly since the weekend. It was Tuesday and she hadn’t seen Jake since she’d said goodbye at the open inspection and gone to Marli’s. She hadn’t bumped into him at work, hadn’t heard from him aside from one brief text message. He seemed to have disappeared.

She pulled out her phone and reread his message from yesterday even though she knew it by heart now.

Thanks for a great weekend—catch up soon??

She’d replied.

Sure. Let me know what suits you.

But there had been no further contact.

She knew she shouldn’t be bothered about that. It was probably for the best. He wasn’t right for her anyway. He was looking at a family house. She should just let him go.

But her head and her heart were at odds. Or was it her head and her hormones?

Maybe all she needed was to find a replacement. Go on some dates and see what happened. Would she forget about him then? She wasn’t sure it was going to be that easy to forget Jake Ryan.

Her phone beeped with a notification as she slid it back into her pocket.

Her pulse raced in anticipation as she pulled it out before disappointment sent her heart plummeting towards her stomach. It was a message from the girls’ group chat.
